Terms and conditions

These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) govern membership of the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (“ALDinHE”, “we”, “us”, “our”). By applying for, purchasing, or renewing membership, you (“Member”, “you”, “your”) agree to be bound by these Terms.

1. Membership Types & Fees

1.1 Term

Membership runs from 1 September to 31 August each year, regardless to when in the year, the membership was purchased.

1.2 Individual Membership (Non‑Institutional)

  • For membership fees, see the join page.
  • Reserved for individuals not working at a Higher Education institution, for example, if you are a student, unemployed, retired.

1.3 Institutional Membership

  • For membership fees, see the join page.
  • Covers all staff at the institution, who can then register for free as institutional staff. Staff must register using their institutional email address.

    2. Member Benefits

    Benefits include:

    • Access to year‑round CPD events programme;
    • Reduced rate for the annual conference;
    • Eligibility to bid for research funding;
    • Access to mentoring;
    • Right to host ALDinHE‑supported regional events;
    • Access to international partner organisations;
    • View the full list of member benefits.
    • We may update or vary benefits to ensure programme relevance and sustainability. Where material changes occur, we will provide reasonable notice.

    3. Cancellations, Refunds & Transfers

    • If you purchase membership, you may have a 14‑day cooling‑off period from the date of purchase, provided you have not used member‑only benefits during that period (e.g., accessing gated content, discounted bookings).

    4. Code of conduct

    • Members must act professionally, respectfully, and inclusively at all ALDinHE events and platforms. We may restrict access or terminate membership without refund for serious or repeated breaches.

    5. Intellectual Property & Resources

    5.1 Content ownership

    • ALDinHE‑owned materials, logos, and content are protected by copyright and may not be reproduced without permission, except as permitted under applicable licences (e.g., Creative Commons for specific LearnHigher resources).

    5.2 Member contributions

    • Content you submit (e.g., resources, articles, forum posts) must be your own or properly licensed. You grant us a non‑exclusive, worldwide licence to host, display, and share your contribution for association purposes, subject to any specific journal or repository terms.

    6. Data Protection & Privacy

    6.1 Your data

    • We process personal data in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable data protection laws.
    • We use your details to administer membership, communicate benefits, and manage events and services.

    7. Liability & Disclaimers

    7.1 No guarantees

    • We use reasonable care to provide membership benefits but do not guarantee uninterrupted access or specific outcomes (e.g., funding awards, publication acceptance).

    7.2 Limitation of liability

    • To the fullest extent permitted by law, ALDinHE is not liable for indirect or consequential losses. Our total liability for any claim related to membership shall not exceed the total fees you paid for the current membership term.

    7.3 Insurance & travel

    • Members attend events at their own risk. You are responsible for appropriate insurance (including travel and health) for in‑person events.

    8. Suspension & Termination

    8.1 Non‑payment

    • If fees are unpaid or payment fails, access to benefits may be suspended until payment is received.

    8.2 Conduct breaches

    • We may suspend or terminate membership for serious or repeated breaches of these Terms, the Events Code of Conduct, or applicable policies. No refund is due where termination is for cause.

    9. Changes to These Terms

    • We may update these Terms from time to time. The effective date will be shown at the top, and we will take reasonable steps to notify members of material changes.
