ALDinHE wants to be kinder to the environment and in place of conference bags & pens, we donate to charity.

With your support from #ALDcon23 tickets, ALDinHE is donating to two charities, the Read and Grow Society for adults and the Literacy Hubs for children. Our host, the University of Portsmouth, works with both of these charities and was the founding partner (along with Portsmouth City Council) in establishing the Literacy Hubs.

Read and Grow Society

read and grow society

There are 8 million illiterate adults in the UK. 1 person in every 15 in your community struggles with reading alongside 48% of prisoners who cannot read. The Read and Grow Society works to grow literacy across the UK to create a national impact that changes lives and develops communities.

ALDinHE will also be donating to The Literacy Hubs, who provide unique, creative and adventurous learning environments that inspire young people, from the least advantaged communities, to improve their literacy skills and fall in love with reading and writing. The first hub called the Pompey Pirates at the Omega Centre, Southsea, opened in September 2020 which has been decorated to look like a pirate ship.
