Social Programme

Thursday 6 June 2023 19.30 – Late

There’s a virtual pub crawl starting at 7.30pm on Thursday evening 6th June with themed pubs and discussion topics. All online and face-to-face delegates are invited to join the virtual pub crawl.

Virtual pub crawl

We have six pubs for you to choose from – each pub has its own Zoom room and theme.

  1. Waxy O’Conners – Glasgow’s biggest and best Irish Bar
  1. The Laurieston – Historic pub – Remarkable example of a 1960s bar
  1. The Bellrock – Darts, dominos and decent chat
  1. The Lismore – Excellent whisky bar
  1. The Three Judges – Offering one of the biggest ranges of real ales, beers and ciders
  1. The Hug and Pint – Grassroots music venue, bar, and restauraunt

Simply come along to whichever pub interests you and either begin or join the conversation. You are free to move in and out of pubs as you please.

The pub crawl Zoom rooms don’t have an official host – the space is open for you to socialise with like-minded Learning Developers and other HE professionals.  The pub conversations are not recorded.

Monday 10th June 2023 7.30pm – Late

Monday evening free time

If you’re arriving in Glasgow on Monday 10th June, ahead of the conference on Tuesday 11th June, there will be a pub crawl led by Alex Cuthbert.

The Monday night tour takes in the favoured haunts of Alasdair Gray, Glasgow’s celebrated artist, novelist, illustrator, and pub connoisseur.

The pub crawl starts at 7:30pm at The Doublet (74 Park Rd, G4 9JF) very near Kelvinbridge Subway. The nearest bus routes are via University Avenue or Great Western Road.

The pub crawl ends at Dram (232 Woodlands Rd, G3 6ND) which is a 6-minute walk back to Kelvinbridge Subway. Please note that the last Subway in both directions will be at around 11:20pm but buses run later and there are Glasgow black cabs readily available at taxi ranks.

Conference Dinner, Awards Ceremony and Ceilidh at the House for an Art Lover

House for an Art Lover
House for an Art Lover

Join us for our awards ceremony and conference dinner to celebrate the accomplishments within the learning development community, at the House for an Art Lover, completed with Comedian Dickson Telfer; followed by a Ceilidh. We will be celebrating those who have gained professional accreditation as certified practitioners (CeP) and certified leading practitioners (CeLP) in learning development. The ceremony will also see the announcement of our ALDinHE Annual Award winner 2023 and JLDHE Reviewer of the Year Awards (RoYA). We encourage and invite you to dress up for the evening’s occasion in your best bib and tucker!

Entertainment with Dickson Telfer

Academic Development Tutor, Dickson Telfer brings you a light-hearted cocktail of education and learning development-based anecdotes, including the occasional quiz element and maybe even some jokes about referencing! (Harvard, mind, none of that APA or Vancouver nonsense). The session is highly unlikely to be evidence-based or underpinned by any pedagogical principles, and all prizes will be issued without checking the standard of the awardee’s contributions against any assessment criteria.

Dickson Telfer
stand up comedy with a microphone

Dickson has over 20 years of experience in Learning Development in Higher Education, clocking up ten years at Bell College/University of the West of Scotland and ten years at Glasgow Caledonian University, meaning he owns two completely unnecessary, space-consuming commemorative carriage clocks, both of which provide the mice in his attic with the correct time. Over these two decades, his fascination for words, both written and spoken, has only grown stronger, a fascination he does his best to share with students in ways that positively affect their academic and professional endeavours.

Ceilidh

ceilidh

The word ceilidh comes from the Gaelic for ‘gathering’ or ‘party’. These days ceilidhs centre around dancing – Scottish style. It’s all about fun, not footwork.

The caller talks you through the dance before you begin and there’s always a helpful soul on the dance floor who’ll point you in the right direction.

As long as you’re enjoying yourself you’re doing it right.

So, if you’re ready and want to see more, try out Visit Scotland’s Interactive Ceilidh Experience

You can also download the step-by-step guides below.
