The use of student self-assessment questionnaires to inform practice

Tuesday 17th June, 09:45-10:50 – Practitioner Mini Keynotes (Room 5)

Biography

I am currently the sole Academic Skills Advisor at ‘University Studies at West Suffolk College’ (a university centre within a larger FE college in Bury St Edmunds). I also act as the sole disability advisor for the center and provide DSA-funded one-to-one specialist study skills support. I’ve have worked in similar roles since 2017.

My academic background is a degree in English Literature and a PhD in early film comedy from the University of York, though my outlook has been informed as much by diverse experiences in admin roles and temporary contracts in social care.

Left to my own devices (this never happens – I work full time and have a small child!), I enjoy reading novels, exploring different philosophies and religions, and, above all, writing songs.

My current interests are:

  • The use of student self-assessment questionnaires to inform service delivery
  • The use of models and theories of helpseeking (e.g. Nelson-Le Gall, Karabenick, Newman) to inform service delivery
  • Application of person-centred counselling concepts and mindfulness in one-to-one sessions
  • Exploring the potential of positive ‘study habits’ as a alternative or complement to stage-based and/or cyclical models of study and learning
  • Exploring the potential of explicit grammar knowledge to enhance students reading comprehension and expressive capacities in writing
  • The use of informal, reflective and free writing to develop students writing and learning.
