On the 15th of each month, we are inviting those working in the field of learning development to share their day. Write up what you have done on the 15th of the month (or your nearest working day to this date) (plus reflections) and share it with us via this short submission form. The entries will be shared here on the ALDinHE blog.
In 2010-11 and 2014-15, the ALDinHE website was previously used for a collective online journal by members of the LD community. The collective journal re-launched on the 15 May 2023. You can read the journal entries for each month. The shared experiences and ideas have helped shape CPD resources developed for new and experienced staff, and to identify other areas for future work.
A reminder will go out on the LDHEN list on the 15th of each month. Share your day by completing the short submission form for it to be added to the ALDinHE blog.

Emily Pennington – Edge Hill University
| As I work part-time, Wednesday is my Monday, so I begin the day by catching up on emails and missed Teams chats before diving into student work. My first 1-2-1 is with a nursing student who wants to strengthen their syntax, referencing, and criticality. As usual, the student is receptive and thoughtful. On return to the office, I type up my notes and check-in with my THRIVE student. As part of THRIVE, Edge Hill’s WP coaching scheme, I am supporting a student with careers and academic skills. In our last meeting, they decided to explore peer mentoring and extra careers support, and we have booked our next catch up to review their progress. I steal a quick lunch (no time for a leisurely reading break today) before sprinting off to teach a session for Early Years Education students on Academic Integrity and Referencing. I was delighted to spot a former GCSE RE student in the room, along with a student I had seen for a 1-2-1 just the day before. In a role where you rarely build long-term working relationships with students, those familiar faces are always a treat. Our discussion of Generative AI in the session sparked a real mix of opinions, from love (especially for GenAI food videos!) to strong environmental concerns – much more polarised than the usual healthy caution that most students express. I then darted back to the office for my final 1-2-1 of the day with an education student – we have been working on consistently adding depth of critique, which they are steadily improving on. I finish the day with a catch-up with my line manager for updates on a time management session we originally developed for sports students but have now reworked into a generic session for the wider University. A productive finish to a full and varied day. |
