By Siri Barrett-Lennard, The University of Western Australia – As Academic Language and Learning Developers, we know that for learning to be inclusive it needs to be accessible. We also know that Universal Design for Learning (UDL) benefits all students. But when it comes to making our online learning resources accessible, do we know how to do this? If, like me, you’d welcome tips on designing for accessibility, there’s good news! AALL’s Connect. Inspire. Share. catalogue now includes a video, slides and links on this topic.
We can use these resources to improve our understanding of accessibility principles, and to see what to do (and what to avoid) in designing our own online learning resources. We can also get practical tips for using Microsoft accessibility tools. And we can meet Alice Lee, Ferne Barclay, Emma Grist and Rhonda Siu from the Academic Skills Unit at Australian Catholic University who have so generously shared their ideas.
Many thanks to this team and to the AALL Professional Development Sub-committee Steve Campitelli, Tiana Blazevic-Bastow, May Kocatepe and Alice Lee for hosting their webinar. Thanks also to Gail Heinrich, AALL Web Manager, for making the webinar recording, slides and links accessible to all on the AALL website.
We invite ICALLD members to join us in future AALL Connect. Inspire. Share. professional development events. Keep an eye out on the AALL website for updates. Email Steve Campitelli at cas@unimelb.edu.au for more information.
