The framing and value of Learning Development work in British Higher Education: An illuminative evaluation of professional practice

How Learning Development professional work is framed, therefore construed, can open or close the visibility of the value it can deliver to students and staff, hence impact their engagement with it. LD was found to deliver the greatest stakeholder benefits through transmitting its expertise in assessment and feedback practices, within community spaces at the margins of subject disciplines, which incorporates social, relational and epistemic value as well as ‘financial’ value. The LD field must therefore work to see itself reframed to capture these multiple values, rather than accept its work being erroneously explained and misunderstood as remedial study skills instruction.
