Event date and time: Wednesday 20th May 2026, 15.00 – 16.00

Listening is often taken for granted in the workplace, but the quality of our listening is rarely considered by individuals or organisations. In an age of screens and accelerated working environments where speed is an assumed necessity, it can be difficult to prioritise listening – which many conceptualise as being a passive rather than an active skill.
Active listening supports learning development practices and values. For example, we listen responsively so that we can work in partnership with students and colleagues as well as advocate for learning development. We listen compassionately so that we can facilitate safe, inclusive learning spaces that build trust and confidence.
In this workshop, we’ll share how listening has influenced our ways of working, invite you to reflect on your own experiences of listening, and through discussion consider ways in which you might enhance this skill.
Hosts:
- Angela Newton, Learning Advisor, Learning Development Team, University of Leeds
- Sandie Donnelly, Academic Skills Manager, Library Services, University of Cumbria
