Research have shown that AI detection does not work and disproportionately labels non-native English speakers’ writing as AI generated. Further, teaching staff are unable to distinguish AI generated works from human written ones, and ‘training’ does not improve accuracy. Please join us to discuss questions such as, ‘How should we redirect academics’ focus from detection to working with AI?’ ‘How should we speak to students when we sense that they may not have done the assessment?’ ‘How best should we encourage students to use GenAI tools fruitfully and in compliance with their module’s requirements?’
This is a 200 strong special interest group that meets once a month for an hour via Microsoft Teams. The group also shares knowledge about AI in between meetings on the AI forum. Each meeting includes a wide range of members: experts in AI, complete novices, also those who lead institutionally and colleagues doing the real work with students (and everything in between).
The CoP is led by Eva Shackel (Bath Spa University) and Cecilia Lo (King’s College London).
