Supporting student carers: inclusive learning development in HE 

This presentation highlights the development and impact of the Carers Achieving Resilience in Education (C.A.R.E.) programme at Queen’s University Belfast, designed to support student carers—particularly female carers—within higher education. Rooted in the Athena SWAN gender equality framework, the programme offers inclusive workshops focused on self-care, academic skills, career planning, and community building. Reflections from participants reveal the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and recognising the often-overlooked challenges faced by student carers. The presentation also addresses logistical hurdles and calls for institutional policies that embed long-term carer support. It encourages educators and learning development staff to adopt proactive, collaborative approaches to enhance equity and resilience in university settings.

Dr Marina de Almeida McLoughlin is the Learning Development and Support Officer for the Centre for Biomedical Sciences Education at Queen’s University Belfast, with an interdisciplinary background in Language, Education, and Psychology. Her interests include inclusive education, the use of AI tools to enhance learning and engagement, and supporting student transition and progression throughout university life.

Dr Fabiana Fausto McCracken is a Postgraduate Learning Development Support Officer in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast, with over 20 years of experience supporting students in academic, linguistic, and research skill development. She contributes to research as an Associate Researcher at Advance HE, focusing on Brazil–UK partnerships and gender equality in higher education.
