These booklets, originally funded through the LearnHigher Centre of Excellence, were written to encourage academic staff to make use of visual approaches in their teaching. Each one offers a brief introduction to the ways in which drawing and other visual methods may be used to support undergraduate and postgraduate learning and research, and contains a range of activities for students.

Each title is addressed to a broad cluster of disciplines: Arts & Humanities;  Business, Education, Law, Management & Social Science; Clinical Education, Health and Social Care; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  They are also available online at the Visual Learning website at https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/visuallearning/drawing/ along with other staff- and student-facing resources.

Learning Outcomes

The booklets include too many different activities and potential learning outcomes to list here. In general, use of these resources will help develop students’ ability to:

  • develop their observational skills and learn how to make rapid and accurate records of key data in almost any situation.
  • undertake conceptual drawing to visualise ideas and processes
  • compare their understanding of key concepts
  • develop critical thinking skills and  revise and reinforce their learning
  • develop communication skills
  • reflection on experience, including planning for professional and personal development.
