Role of the Learning Developer in empowering responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI): digging deeper into the complexities of AI

Event date and time: Thursday 19th March 2026, 14.00 – 15.00

Our presentation at ALDCon25 outlined a significant increase in requests for embedded teaching on AI, highlighting the challenges faced when creating sessions within the rapidly changing AI landscape, and the importance of meaningful dialogue with academic staff. This session will provide a brief overview of what was covered previously, discuss developments and invite perspectives from others.

Since our presentation, it has become apparent that students’ increased awareness of, and openness about using AI belie their ability to utilise it appropriately in their studies. These changes in student behaviour and updates to institutional guidance on AI usage, have necessitated adaptations to our teaching content, leading to the development of more meaningful activities to elicit deeper engagement with appropriate AI tools.

Alongside conversations following our presentation, these developments have led us to reflect further upon the Learning Developer’s unique position in this ever-changing pedagogical landscape, and our perceived expertise in AI. Whilst we strive to empower students and academics to use these tools effectively, we question who is empowering us to lead this charge. In this session we will consider and ask for your thoughts on what the role of the Learning Developer is, could be and should be, in empowering responsible use of AI.

Presenters:

Katie Winter and Sam Gridley, University of Surrey
