Biography

I became Academic Skills Tutor in 2017, having previously worked as teacher and manager in English for Academic Purposes posts abroad and in the UK. My work with International Students helps me to support all learners to overcome the challenges they may face when immersed in a new environment, both academically and culturally. I am interested in how affective factors have a key role to play within educational achievement and love enabling learners to develop their confidence and to realise that their everyday life skills and experiences can be transferred to their academic studies. I enjoy the challenge of incorporating episodic memory into my learning materials in order to simplify complex skills and make them less daunting for learners. I also love creating opportunities for students to engage more with their peers who are great (but often unrealised) resources.

How can I help learning developers?

I love sharing good practice,  being a sounding board and working out solutions to problems, so am happy to work together with my fellow Learner Developer colleagues!

I have a lot of experience working with International Students and am currently International Lead within the Academic Skills Team, so  if you work with International Students I can be of help.

I’ve recently been researching into the HE journey of care experienced and estranged students and working with these students – it has been a steep learning curve but definitely one that can be promoted more within HE, and whilst I don’t consider myself an expert in this area, I’m happy to  discuss further if this interests  you.

Other projects I’ve worked on  include: learner self-reflection, episodic memory in language learning, academic integrity, critical thinking skills.
