Biography

I have worked for many years in higher education, teaching, to begin with, medieval history, before moving on to the field of learning development. I have worked as an Academic Skills Specialist, at Cardiff Met, for more than ten years now. I am jointly responsible for developing ‘academic skills’ provision across all of the university’s constituent schools. I have a particular interest in approaches to learning, writing practice, and notions of success and excellence as it might be applied broadly to a student’s learning experience.

How can I help learning developers?

I am more than willing to discuss any and all aspects of academic skills provision with colleagues. I have supported colleagues at Cardiff Met by helping to come up with creative classroom-based solutions relating to this type of provision aimed at boosting student engagement. I have a lot of experience of devising academic inductions, both for UGs and PGs, including large cohorts of international students. I have also designed co-curricular workshop programmes, broadly on ‘academic practice’, designed to complement timetabled-teaching within disciplines.
