Areas of Expertise
Academic Literacies | Academic Writing | Critical Pedagogies and LD | Learning Spaces & Learning Communities | Professional IdentityBiography
I first came to Learning Development about 7 years ago; my prior background was in English for Academic Purposes at the University of Greenwich and before that ESOL and Functional Skills and elements of teacher development and CPD, mainly in community education. During my time in LD, I’ve been able to work with ‘home’ as well as international students and undergraduates, postgraduates and Degree Apprentices at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. I’ve also experienced many students’ need for guidance in IT skills and witnessed staff and student attempts to understand how to react to the possibilities offered by AI.
How can I help learning developers?
I’d regard myself as having a particular interest rather than special expertise in the areas listed and/or those I mention here:
- How to make academic writing workshops more like tutorials, ie responsive to individuals’ starting points and priorities, focused on work in progress or recently completed and founded on collaborative talk
- The relationship between writing and thinking and implications of this for the use of tools in academic writing
- LD roles and professional identity
- CPD and mentoring
- Student perspectives on LD
- Student ownership of their studies
Please do get in touch if you would like to exchange ideas and/or mull over thoughts about an aspect of professional practice.
