Biography

Simone Maier is an Australian-born artist, researcher and lecturer based in London. She is a Module Leader for Critical Creative Practice and a lecturer in Fine Art and Critical & Contextual Studies at London Metropolitan University. She co-writes and publishes research into fine art curriculum development and inclusive pedagogies. Her practice and scholarship probe the intersections of art-making, hybrid and digital teaching methods, creative learning, academic literacies and social justice in higher education.

After completing a BA in English Literature at Monash University, Simone relocated to the UK to work in IT before returning to study Fine Art (First Class Hons) at London Met in 2018. Awarded a Diversity & Creativity scholarship and a Fellowship of AdvanceHE (2019), she went on to earn a PGCert in Learning & Teaching (Distinction), begin an MFA at Goldsmiths (interrupted for pandemic-pivoted to pedagogical research) and most recently complete an MA in Art Education, Culture & Practice at UCL (Distinction, 2023).

Simone’s published work—including collaborations on Supercomplexity in higher education, creative humane approaches to teaching, and curricula design for art foundation —have appeared as book chapters, journal articles, and blogs. Her most recent publications include a chapter ‘Hope in an Art School’ in Stories of Hope (2025). She balances her art-making and research with roles as National Councillor for the National Society for Education in Art & Design (NSEAD) and UCU branch officer, and contributes to educator networks advocating for inclusive, student-centred practice.

I’m always keen to collaborate – and talk/write – about:

  • Fine art curriculum design, and critical pedagogy
  • Digital and hybrid teaching methods, VLE integration
  • Academic literacies, creative writing and peer support
  • Student-centred, socially just approaches to learning & teaching

With extensive experience as module lead and lecturer, I can advise on:

  • Curriculum development and revision
  • Scholarly publishing and network building in art education
